What is Tattoo Removal?

Tattoo removal is performed using an energy-based laser device. A concentrated beam of light is focused on the desired tattoo to be removed and the light breaks up the ink particles that make up the tattoo into smaller parts that can be broken down by your body’s white blood cells and eliminated as waste. Tattoo removal is a little bit of a journey, it is not a one and done treatment.

Tattoos will appear lighter and lighter after each treatment, but typically 6-12 treatments are expected to fully treat a tattoo.

As many patients compare tattoo removal to the process of getting the tattoo initially, a numbing cream is offered for tattoo removal. With numbing, patients typically experience mild to moderate discomfort. The treatment (depending on the size of the tattoo) takes about 10-20 minutes to treat each time.

Small zapping sensations can be felt intermittently, comparable to a rubber band snap.

Benefits?
How long do results last?

Tattoos are removed, or lightened, permanently. Many times, people opt for tattoo lightening prior to a tattoo coverup for a more aesthetically pleasing new piece of art. This treatment is a great option for those who are having regrets about a tattoo they’ve received in the past.

Risks?
What to do before the procedure?

RISK:
As this is a light-based energy device, tattoos such as permanent makeup around the eyes cannot be treated safely. There is a risk of some bruising after the procedure. There can be some skin discoloration as a result of this treatment that could be permanent. Most inks can be treated, but lighter colors such as whites, yellows, and reds are difficult to treat and may not be a good candidate for tattoo removal. Because of this, there is also a risk for a suboptimal aesthetic result.

What to do before the procedure?
What to do before the procedure? We recommend coming to the office in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that provides easy access to the tattoo you wish to be treated. We recommend against taking aspirin or ibuprofen before your appointment, as this results in an increased risk of bruising. Normal activities can be resumed after treatment, we just recommend keeping the treatment area out of direct sunlight for a few days.
